9:15PM HORNETS vs LAKERS – (HORNETS +5)
Both teams are coming off dominant semifinal performances, making a clear statement that they belong on the biggest stage. Funny enough, I had both squads losing in the first round, and again in the semis, but they’ve proved me wrong every step of the way. They battled, they believed, and now they’re just one win away from a championship. Let’s start with the Hornets. In the regular season, they fell to the Huskies, and early on it looked like history might repeat itself, they were down 7 at halftime. But what followed was elite. The Hornets locked in defensively, holding the Huskies to just 12 points in the second half. They completely shut down the Huskies’ big three, who shot a combined 5-for-37. That defensive effort flipped the game on its head, leading to a 14-point win. Leading the way was Jeroy, who dropped 26 points on nearly 50% shooting and delivered the kind of performance champions are made of. I said if the Hornets were going to make a deep run, their leader would need to carry them, and he has, and now has Buzz City one win away from a title. On the other side, the Lakers came out firing. Their offense exploded early, jumping out to a 24-point lead. Akash looked unstoppable with 21 points on 77% shooting, and Abhiram nearly posted a triple-double, doing it all on both ends. They were fast, fearless, and in control. But then came a scare. Shottas clawed back and cut the lead to just three. That late-game collapse exposed the Lakers' biggest weakness, defense. To their credit, they regrouped just in time and held on to punch their ticket to the final. So here we are, Hornets vs. Lakers. Defense vs. Offense. Hustle vs. Firepower. As for my pick? Defense wins championships, and that’s why I’m giving the edge to the Hornets. Their ability to lock down stars, control tempo, and bring intensity on every possession gives them the upper hand. If they start hot, I don’t see the Lakers’ defense holding up. Still, both teams have stars who can flip the script. If the Lakers find rhythm early and stay composed, this could be a classic. It’s going to come down to effort, execution, and heart. One game. One champion. Let the battle begin.
